*The International® LT® with S13® Integrated Powertrain was tested head-to-head using TMC Type IV testing methodology against competitive on-highway aero models with comparable specifications: Freightliner Cascadia AeroX DD15, Kenworth T680 MX13, Volvo VNL760 D13. Testing proved the International LT with S13 Integrated Powertrain to be at least 5% more fuel efficient than these models. The International LT with S13 Integrated Powertrain uses up to 3.5% more DEF per gallon of fuel compared to comparable on-highway aerodynamic models.

The International® S13® Integrated Powertrain is our most advanced, easy-to-maintain, and fuel-efficient powertrain yet and brings new levels of capability to both our on-highway semi-trucks, including LT® and RH™ Series models, as well as our vocational trucks, like the HX® and HV™ Series models. In fact, the International® LT® with the S13 Integrated Powertrain leads the on-highway aero category by at least 5% in fuel economy*. 

Capable of up to 515 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque, the S13 Integrated Powertrain consists of an engine, transmission and aftertreatment system designed together to maximize integration between systems while allowing each component to focus on what it does best. The result is an efficient, capable and easy-to-maintain powertrain that drivers love to drive.

Any engine, no matter how well designed, is only as good as the transmission it’s mated to. Delivering the power to the road in a smooth, predictable manner is no small feat when you consider the torque delivered by a 13L engine. Because they were developed in unison and utilize the same software, the engine and the Automated Manual T14® Transmission are designed to work in perfect harmony. As a result, drivers will find that the shifts are smooth, quick and timed perfectly for the terrain on which the truck is driving.

01 Shift actuators Shift actuator packaging was designed specifically for automated functionality (rather than adapted from a manual), allowing for more compact gearbox housing
02 Variable oil level upper reservoir Oil is pumped to the reservoir under lower loads to reduce parasitic losses, allowing for the continuous lubrication of gears by the oil sprayers
03 Planetary gears The planetary gear set eliminates the need for a dedicated reverse gear, shortening the gearbox and allowing for better packaging within the chassis
04 Single countershaft A single countershaft with helical gears lowers the overall weight of the unit without compromising the durability or performance of the transmission

The durability of the S13 Integrated Powertrain is a testament to the exhaustive engineering that went into its development and the skill and craftsmanship of those who build each powertrain.

Several design choices help contribute to its reliability. Eliminating the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler is a prime example. Instead of trying to control NOx emissions inside the cylinder, the engine operates with zero EGR during regular operation, so it can focus on generating more power. Plus, no EGR during normal operations means 100% of the exhaust flow goes through the turbo allowing the use of a simple, more reliable fixed vane turbocharger.

NEXT-GEN AFTERTREATMENT SYSTEM

Because there’s no EGR during regular operation, NOx must be treated in a different way. To do this, the engineers developed the Dual Stage Aftertreatment system that injects a first dose of DEF just downstream of the turbo in the evaporator tube and a second dose inside the aftertreatment system container. Since cooled EGR has been eliminated from the combustion chamber, much less particulate matter is generated. This allows for extended service intervals and eliminates the need for active regens. In fact, the cleaner combustion cycle generates so much less soot, engineers were able to eliminate the need for a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) in the aftertreatment system. Combined, the aftertreatment system provides a simple, reliable solution that’s easily serviceable.

The piston head features maximum cooling properties, which, when combined with the double overhead cam design, directly equates to less fuel consumed during the combustion cycle.
